No Farther, No Further

⠀⠀⠀⠀Let’s find a motel and drive no farther tonight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Look, we’ve gone all day circling to another start.
⠀⠀⠀⠀We’ll be no further off having a home in sight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Admit it, we’re lost. Nothing about this feels right
⠀⠀⠀⠀enough to be familiar. We’re on no known chart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Let’s find a motel and drive no farther tonight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Weren’t you watching our map? Turn on the light,
⠀⠀⠀⠀pick us a destination, don’t aim, throw a dart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀We’ll be no further off having a home in sight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀I’m tired as bitterness, you’re weary as spite,
⠀⠀⠀⠀neither of us any moves we’d care to outsmart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Let’s find a motel and drive no farther tonight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀After so long a stretch of dark, anything bright
⠀⠀⠀⠀will do, even opposite no direction’s counterpart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀We’ll be no further off having a home in sight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀We’re nowhere near where we want if we fight
⠀⠀⠀⠀until you’ve lost your way and I’ve lost all heart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Let’s find a motel and drive no farther tonight—
⠀⠀⠀⠀We’ll be no further off having a home in sight.

I love the word play and the melancholy mood, though the speaker seems to be offering an olive branch, or at least, a temporary plan. My favorite line was the third from last.

    Coal (Fireblossom)

  2. Motel — temporary shelter, a respite from the journey–and a time-out. A way to ward off conflict. Nice.
