Last Night’s Moment

⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀History will soon pull over
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and slow to a halt.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀I’ve brought a god along for
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀good luck as it were.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Grace is his natural reaction
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀to my worst accidents.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀He lets me sit alone in peace
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀so as not to overreact.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀He peeks over the dashboard
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀through the window out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀I have left him no room to move
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀around all my old books.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀I have driven myself all the way
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀here thinking to leave.

  1. A god for good luck—a rabbit-foot god maybe. Otherwise—not so much thinks me.
