“We’d Rather Have Our Pigs.”

“And the crowd began pleading with Jesus
to go away and leave them alone.”
                                                                                                                                    —Mark 5:17 NLT

“No sir! we much prefer our pain.
If we were healed, what would we complain
about? From the worst hurt to the most mundane,
                                            we’d rather have our pigs.
“No thanks, we don’t want our madmen cured.
We don’t wish our security assured
nor any and all calamity deterred.
                                            We’d rather have our pigs.
“Go away, we don’t want our troubles to cease.
From our self-made prisons we don’t beg release.
We don’t need freedom, nor do we wish peace.
                                            We’d rather have our pigs.

“Why’s it we get so picky
                                                                                        about our meat
                                                                  when pork isn’t even what
                                                                                        we’ll allow us to eat?
“Leave us alone. We aim low, nowhere above.
Whatever we fear most, that’s what our hopes dream of.
We didn’t ask you to come. We don’t want a lasting love.
                                            We’d rather have our pigs.”
