Divided By

⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divided by.
⠀⠀⠀⠀What, math?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Not my thing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide by two,
⠀⠀⠀⠀make halves,
⠀⠀⠀⠀someone else
⠀⠀⠀⠀still will get
⠀⠀⠀⠀the bigger half.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide by a large enough number,
⠀⠀⠀⠀and my share becomes nothing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀As long as I still have something,
⠀⠀⠀⠀it only means I’m not yet dividing by
⠀⠀⠀⠀a number big enough, nothing more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Start dividing angles and I get lost quick.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Since dropping tenth grade geometry,
⠀⠀⠀⠀when have I needed to bisect directions
⠀⠀⠀⠀between different paths I might take?
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀The answers are in the back of the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide time into sufficiently small times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divided by what?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Religions?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Ethnic tribes?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Genders?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Generations?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Languages?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Not my thing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Make one person out to be
⠀⠀⠀⠀any different from any other,
⠀⠀⠀⠀someone else still gets to be
⠀⠀⠀⠀the one better than the other.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Draw enough distinctions between us,
⠀⠀⠀⠀and the lines all smudge into ugly gray.
⠀⠀⠀⠀As long as I convince myself I’m unique,
⠀⠀⠀⠀it only means I’m not yet dividing by
⠀⠀⠀⠀enough real differences, nothing more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Start dealing out dreams like cutting a deck
⠀⠀⠀⠀of cards, your dreams versus my dreams,
⠀⠀⠀⠀and I get lost quick. Since being on my own,
⠀⠀⠀⠀when have I needed to sort out meanings?
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀The answers are in the back of the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide time into sufficiently small times.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divided by what more?
⠀⠀⠀⠀By what more divisive?
⠀⠀⠀⠀A word?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Is that what divides us?
⠀⠀⠀⠀A word we both know?
⠀⠀⠀⠀A word we both hear?
⠀⠀⠀⠀A word we both say over and over?
⠀⠀⠀⠀Not my thing, not my thing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀Oh, but say it then.
⠀⠀⠀⠀If I have to know division,
⠀⠀⠀⠀divide me by
⠀⠀⠀⠀you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀By everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Making me nothing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀And say it again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide you by
⠀⠀⠀⠀me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀By zero.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Making you everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀The answers are in the back of the book.
⠀⠀⠀⠀Divide time into sufficiently small times.

  1. Holy smokes! Your views are so like mine. I agree with all you said; people concentrate on divisions (looooong division!) rather than commonalities. This meditation on the notion of what makes us alike vs. “different” resonates for me, especially because I have manic depression and PTSD. Talk about a game-changer. Thanks for stopping by my blog, too! Amy

  2. Make one person out to be
    any different from any other,
someone else still gets to be
the one better than the other.

so many lines i could cite, this
is the essence to me, ty for this,
    and all of these words.

    • Heh, should I quip that when we make one line out to be different from any other, some line still gets to be the one better than the other? *smile* Thank you for reading and responding. ✒Cyn

      • yes, you should, and you did and i for one appreciates a razor sharp wit so early in my day. i hope you won’t mind me visiting often, ’cause i’m really drawn to your poetry. *smiling here too*
